Why regular cleaning and maintenance is important for devices

In Access Control, Alarm Systems, Audio, Networking, Structured Wiring, Video, Video Surveillance

Dust can get absolutely everywhere, which we can all attest to that. Unfortunately devices are prone to overheating when too much dust settles within them. This is actually the number one cause of premature failure. Since most of these devices aren’t exactly cheap, you will want to extend their lifetime as much as you can. Regular maintenance and cleaning will help you do exactly that and more.

Regular cleaning

Regardless of the IP ratings on the enclosures and devices themselves, regular cleaning will be required. Cameras protect their internals from dust and water but the external surface is prone to dirt and dust settling on it. This can cause a blurry image or even block parts of the image. A clean casing is key to getting the best image your camera can produce. Even interior cameras are prone to dust settling on them over time which can affect the image as well.

Servers and computers are not resistant to dirt and dust either. Unfortunately most computer and server enclosures do not have an IP rating at all. If you’re lucky, there are dust filters installed by the fans, but even those have to be cleaned to provide proper cleaning. With the powerful fans that computers and servers are fitted with, dust has become a real problem. Dust clogs up the fans and heat sinks. If ignored, they will become impossible to remove. This dust can then cause equipment to overheat because of the disrupted airflow due to the dust. Overheating equipment will first appear very sluggish and will perform tasks much slower. Then finally one day the equipment will break down completely. This is also where system maintenance comes into play.

Maintenance

Maintaining security equipment is becoming more and more crucial. From the obvious hardware aspect, but also the software. Hackers are becoming more and more sly about finding back-doors into software. As such software updates are issued regularly to prevent these back-doors. Without these updates you may run the risk of having your equipment hacked. More on security vulnerabilities of security systems here.

Maintenance also extends to the hardware aspect. All devices have to be assessed on a regular basis to ensure they are in working order. Having cameras fail or and access control system seize functioning can be very devastating. That’s why regular maintenance is important. During maintenance equipment should be examined. Wires should be visually inspected and some equipment stress tested. Ensuring that all equipment is working fine is the key to maximum reliability.

Our Offerings

We offer regular maintenance and cleaning for your security devices. Servers, computers, cameras and enclosures can all benefit from regular check-ups. We can create a schedule for the regular cleaning. Depending on the level of dust at your location these schedules may be more frequent. Restaurants and auto body shops are amongst the businesses that require frequent attention. You can read more on our security maintenance program here.
